For £60 and in less than two hours, a Land-Rover can be fitted with the new Mayflower Capstan winch, without any alteration to the vehicle, and thus be used as a highly mobile tool both for recovery and for large obstacle and space clearance. Recently, I watched the winch move over a ton of dead weight across rough ground; it also made light work of recovering a heavy vehicle and de-ditching itself. There cannot be many of the estimated quarter of a million people who use Land-Rovers who could not find good use for a winch at this price.

The Mayflower Capstan is easy to handle, takes winching right out of the specialist/technical field and makes it a practical proposition for any Land-Rover User that has a need, even an occasional one for a haul-and-move facility.

The Capstan unit can be factory fitted or bought in kit form; it fits all normal 88in., 109in. and six-cylinder LandRovers as well as the new Range Rover. Each unit is tested to an overload of 45001b and fails safe, by a replaceable shear pin, at 25001b, retaining the load.

The drive is taken from the engine crankshaft via worm and wheel to the bollard. Recorn

mended rope for the winch is fin. diameter nylon.

The only spares programme currently scheduled is for shear pins in case of overload.
