Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Ralph Hilton

• Ralph Hilton is a name known to many people, but the man behind the name is known by very few. The chairman and managing director of Hilton's Transport Services is constantly in the limelight because of his takeover activities. Builder of a substantial transport empire, a tycoon who works a 14hour day, six days a week, and a man who has an insatiable desire to make progress in his chosen way of life—this might be considered by some as an adequate description of Ralph Hilton or of so many successful businessmen. To dismiss Ralph Hilton in these terms is to do him less than justice.

In both his business and his social life he displays a warmth and friendliness towards his fellow beings not often associated with highly successful men. He takes pleasure through providing pleasure to others and spends a great deal of the little leisure time he has in the service of other people.

He is the charity representative for three organizations in south-east London. This entails him in personal visits to indisposed members and to ensuring that their dependants receive adequate assistance should the need arise. At the other end of the scale he is lavish in his hospitality and at any gathering in which he is involved his main concern is that those around him are being "looked after".

On Whit ,Monday Ralph Hilton sponsored the International Trophy race meeting at Crystal Palace. He spent a busy day attending to the needs of his 300 guests. The very next day he was completing the negotiations which brought J & H Transport into his group.

At heart Ralph Hilton is very much a family man. He and his wife take great pleasure from the company of their two children and five grandchildren. He looks upon his group in family terms and is proud of the fact that eight of his 10 original employees still work with him. He is equally proud of the fact that when companies join him in almost every case the entire staff Move over and become loyal members of the group.

Ralph Hilton describes his organization as a place where people get their jackets off and get on with the job. But qualifications also matter and he sets the pace with membership of the CIT, ITA, Lloyd's and the Worshipful Company of Carmen.

With so little leisure time he packs the pleasure, physical exertion, brain work and open-air activity normally associated with half a dozen sports and hobbies into one—powerboat racing. He is looking forward to a successful season in his Ford-powered "858".

At 47, Ralph Hilton has put-a great deal into life without taking too much out of it, except perhaps the pleasure of making a success of everything he does. I.S.
