Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A bed length of 38ft is provided by a Dyson 90-ton low-loader trailer that was recently supplied to the Pointer Group to transport a 76-ton transformer for shipment to America. The main deck members were lengthened by the insertion of two 7ft sections. One or both of the sections can be. used to provide additional length, the normal length being 24ft. The frame has a maximum overall width of 9ft and the width can be varied from 4ft to the maximum in increments of 1ft. Supported on full-width fiat-topped bolsters, the swan necks are drilled to accommodate variations in width.

In narrow-frame form, the trailer can be used to transport excavators and so on, the tracks of the machine being located on the outside of the frame, and this gives a useful overall reduction in load height as well as greater stability.

Other features of the trailer include detachable cranks at both ends, which provide for loading from either end or over the side, for adjustment of deck height for travelling and for lowering of the centre deck onto the ground for loading. The front and rear carriages are identical and each has a load capacity of 50 tons.

In normal -operation the front carriage is steered by the drawbar connected to the towing vehicle, the drawbar of the rear

bogie being connected to the frame to give automatic steering. Both carriages are fitted with auxiliary steering which is provided by hydraulic cylinders coupled to the front axles and powered by diesel-engined pump units controlled by hand-operated valves.

With the frame removed, the two carriages can be used for the transport of long loads up to a total of 90 tons, the swivelling bolsters being universally mounted. Each carriage is equipped with 16 wheels with 8.25-15 Michelin X tyres, fitted in pairs to four oscillating axles on underslung springs. Brakes are fitted to all wheels and are operated by a two-line air-pressure system.
