ANEW vehicle for the bulk transport of flour was demonstrated recently by Leyland Motors, Ltd., at the works of Henry Simon, Ltd., Cheadle Heath, Stockport. It has as its basis an Octopus eight-wheeled chassis, the power take-off of which is arranged to drive the various units required for discharging the load.

The Duramin body is 24 ft. 6 in. long, 7 ft. 5 in. wide and 11 ft. 9 in. high, the capacity being 850 cu. ft: At the rear are the controls used to discharge the load and the inspection windows are kept free from flour by means of screenwipers. A searchlight enables unloading to be readily checked. Under normal conditions a full load can be discharged in about 45 min.

In the base of the body are three longitudinal hopper bays which slope to the rear, the steep sides directing the flour on to Aeroflow dischargers located at the base of each bay. The dischargers introduce compressed air into the mass of flour to aerate it and make it "fluid," so that it flows easily to a transverse collecting chute at the rear.

These chutes, in turn, feed the flour into two Simon blowing seals which meter it into the conveying air stream to the bakery. This vehicle will form ' one of a fleet of Leylands operated by the Scottish Co-operative Society, and will be used to transport flour from mills in Edinburgh to Co-operative bakeries within a radius of 30-35 miles.
