APPLICATIONS for permission to run new services across Redheugh Bridge, over the River Tyne, which was freed from tolls last month, were made to the Northern Traffic Commissioners, last week, by the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd. Various other proposals were involved.
Gateshead Town Council, one of the objectors, maintained that the " Northern General " had contemplated • introducing these new services only when it was announced that the council was applying for power compulsorily to acquire the local tramways undertaking of Gateshead and District Tramways Co.
Gateshead Corporation, it was stated, was promoting legislation to acquire the trams and to take over full trans
port powers. It had also received an oiler of help from Newcastle Corporation. The Commissioners were urged not to take any irretrievable step until the transport situation was clarified by legislation.
If services should be 'provided as a matter of urgency; they should be run by Gateshead Council, or by Newcastle Corporation by agreement with Gates
head. Otherwise, . only .temporary licences should be granted.
The " Northern General " replied that the council could not commence the process of taking over the trams Until next November and that it would receive strenuous • oppposition all through Parliament. If the measure were passed, it would not receive Royal assent until July or August next year. It was unlikely that the whole matter would be cleared up before 1939.
It was stated that a protective fare was proposed, which would avoid competition with the Gateshead trams.
Decision was reserved.
