Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Clay Modelling for Bodies.

[239-1.1 In reply to a number of inquiries with respect to the "Clay Modelling for Coachbuilders article which we recently published, we have pleasure in announcing that the address of M. Botiaux, who is exploiting this, is 28, rue Dreyfus, a Levallois Perret. The engineer is M. Iirlazerolle, 11, Square Saint-Croix-de-la-tiretonnene, Pans.

Electric Ambulances.

[2395] (Clerk to Guardians).—You should communicate with the undermentioned makers and importers of battery-driven vehicles:—

Edison Accumulators, Ltd., Duke Street, St. James's, S.W. H. Simonis and Co., Ltd., Walthamstow. "Cedes" Electric Traction, Ltd., 112, Great Portland Street, W. Conway Jenkins (Fram), 175, Piccadilly, W. Mossay and Co. (Lloyd), 45, Horseferry Road, S.W.

"No Data To Go On."

[2396] (Derbyshire).—We think your employer should read our issues of the 5th March and 19th March. We are also sending one of our sheets of working costs. Try to get him to ascertain the actual cost per mile run of his horse-vans ; he will probably find that it comes out at double the cost per mile of the motorvan to handle the same load, but this is, of course, subject to his being able usefully to provide the work to yield the additional mileage in the event of his purchasing a motorvan.

Concerning Three Makes.

[2397] (Sheffield). We are not acquainted with the makers of the Rapide motor lorries which you mention. They certainly are not well known in commercial-motor circles, or we should know of them. Both the Albion and Napier makes are excellent, and you will do well to make further inquiries concerning them. The makers of these have specialized in 15-cwt. models, and they will be agreeable to supply full information if you write to them. We do not understand your reference to examining machines, as there is no occasion to do this unless you are contemplating the purchase of second-hand vehicles. You can rely upon the excellence of delivery by reputable makers such as the abovementioned. The addresses of these parties are, respectively, as under :— Albion Motor Car Co., Ltd., Scotstoun, Glasgow. I). Napier and Son, Ltd., 14, New Burlington Street, W.

If you wish, for your own protection2 to engage a member of our staff to examine a machine of which you are about to take delivery, our charge is two guineas, if in London.

A Petrol Two-tonner for Dust Collection and General Haulage.

[2398] (U.D.C. Surveyor).—You will get good comparative information by applying to the Comptroller of the Westminster City Council. We dealt at length with his comparative report in our issue of the 17th July last, but that issue is out of print. Seeing that the stoppages in Westminster are much closer together than they will be in your case, a petrol lorry should work to better advantage for you than for Westminster. Other authorities which to our knowledge use petrol-driven vehicles for work of the type whieh you mention are as under, together with the name of the official who is responsible for their working: Mr. A. Race, Borough Engineer and Surveyor, Barrow-in-Furness (Thornycroft wagons). Mr. John A. Brodie, City Engineer, Liverpool (Halley and Leyland wagons). We understand that. the Highways Department of the Sheffield City Council, and the Surveyor's Departmeut of the Darlington R.D.C., are using Hallford petrol lorries for similar purposes, and also the Surveyor to the Woodbridge R.D.C. Halley vehicles arc also in use at Aberdeen, Blackburn, Blackpool, Rotherham, Salford, Glasgow and Sheffield, but we have no complete records as to the purposes. Mr. F. Brookman, the head of the Cleansing Department of the Rochdale Corporation, can give you sonic information about Karrier wagons in the service of his department. We are of opinion that a two-ton petrol-driven vehicle, loaded as you indicate, can be worked economically, half its time in the collection of household refuse, and half its time on general haulage. Westminster has made certain experiments in respect of the loading of a hand truck, which may afterwards be coupled behind the wagon, when on dust collection, as a trailer. This gives a larger number of cubic yards per trip. Trailers are extensively used there.

Taking Out Parties in a Goods Van.

[2399] (Carrier). If you take passengers out in your goods van, and it is driven by a petrol engine, you will have to pay all the year round 3d. per gallon tax without rebate. You must pay carriage tax to the local excise authorities, and this will cost you two guineas per annum if the vehicle weighs two tons or less unladen, or three guineas per annum if it exceeds two tons unladen. You must additionally. pay 15s. hackney carriage licence annually. Seeing that your vehicle will be a hackney carriage, you will not be liable to pay the sliding scale of horse-power duty on the engine.

To Touch or Not to Touch the Second-hand Pleasure Car ?

[2400] (Durham).—We advise you not to purchase an eight-year-old pleasure car for the purpose which you indicate. Such a vehicle will be extravagant in petrol, and unsuited for use as a goods vehicle without considerable alterations. You cannot obtain a vehicle at so low a price as 260 to give satisfaction for the service. You will probably have to pay as much as 290 for a chassis, and another 260 to equip it with tires and overhaul it. Probably the best way to get in touch with the seller of such a vehicle is through the classified-advertisement section of THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR. If you care to submit the replies, the Editor will give an opinion upon them for a nominal fee of half a guinea.. In the event of any inspection afterwards being. required, the charge is two guineas, inclusive of written report, for any vehicle lying within ten miles of Charing Cross. Beyond that radius, travelling expenses are charged in addition.
