A DMITTING that they had operated 1-1 irregular excursions to Margate and Torquay from the Manchester district for three years, Pleasureways (1955), Ltd., Oldham, last week asked the North Western Traffic Conunissioners to grant them short-term licences for seven-day excursions to these resorts.

For the company, Mr. S. Moss said they had not realized that their activities were illegal until a few days previously. They were fully prepared to take the consequences for this unwitting action, but required a short-term licence so that passengers who had booked would not be disappointed. There were objections by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.; Yeiloway Motor Services, Ltd., North Western Road Car Co., Ltd.; Kirkbright and Clarke, Ltd.; Smiths Tours (Wigan), Ltd.; Stanley Spencers Tours (Man chester), Ltd.; Happiway Tours, Ltd.; W. Robin son and Sons (Great Harwood), Ltd.; and Sheering Tours (Manchester), Ltd. Mr. G. B. Barlow, a Pleasureways director, pointed out that the corn pany did not intend to make any financial gain if the application were granted.

For the objectors, Mr. F. D. Walker referred to Pleasureways' application in 1956 for excursions to various South Coast resorts, when Margate and Torquay were excluded. It was evident that Mr. B. Eastwood, who represented the company at that hearing, was fully aware of the limitations of the licence granted, and should have known that excursions to Margate and Torquay were illegal.

Refusing the application, Mr. F. Williamson, chairman, said it was not possible legally to grant the licence. Other operators were able to cater for the people who had booked with Pleasureways.
