Douglas Unit with Commer Engine Capable of Over 55 m.p.h.

A FORWARD -CONTROL four ITt fire tender with single lyres at the rear, and equipped with a 450-galion foam compound tank and 150-gallon water tank, is now being built for road or cross-country operaation by Douglas Equipment, Ltd,, Cheltenham. It employs a Commer 109 b.h.p. petrol engine and four-speed gearbox, and has a maximum speed of over 55 m.p.h.

Special features include twin oil ignition coils, waterproofed ignition system, dual fuel pumps—one operated from the camshaft and the other electrical — adjustable engine-speed governor, and air and oil filters.

The two-speed transfer box installed provides, in conjunction with the normal gearbox, eight forward and Iwo reverse ratios and there is .a direct drive from the power takeoff to the main pump. Both axles are fully floating and are equipped with interchangeable drive units of 6 to 1 ratio.

The minimum ground clearance of the chassis with Michelin Metallic C20 tyres is 11 ins., and as the front and rear tracks are almost identical-6 ft. 3 ins. and 6 ft. J ins. respectively—the risk of puncturing the

rear tyres is reduced. The standard wheelbase is 10 ft. 6 ins.

The cab has an insulated roof and is mounted independently from the body, the structure being retained on the frame through a spring suspension system. Two 25-gallon petrol tanks are fitted on the .side of the chassis to provide a good operating range combined with ample reserve for static pumping, A Coventry Climax FF 500 pump, driven from the transfer-box power take-off, is equipped with two 2i-in. instantaneous water deliveries and a 4-in. London round-thread suction inlet. it is primed through a rotary-type airexhaust pump driven by a friction drive from the main pump shaft. An instrument panel, with pressure and compound gauges, is fitted adjacent to the pump control at the rear.

Two mechanical foam generators are permanently connected to the pump and foam compound tank, the rate of delivery being 1,250 g.p.m. with a foam jet of 60 ft. minimum length. The capacity of the tank permits a continuous run of approximately 30 mins.

Although a selfcontained unit, the vehicle can be employed as a standard fire appliance in conjunction with static or hydrant water supplies.

The 150-gallon water tank is mounted on the chassis, the top being made detachable for cleaning the interior. A standard London round thread is provided on the water• and compound tanks.
