Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In order to ascertain what steps could be taken to solve the Durham road problem, so far as the mining areas in the east and west of the county are concerned, where many of the classified main roads are in a very indifferent state, owing to heavy motor traffic wear and tear, representatives of the various authorities interested met at the Shires Hall, Durham, at the request of the Ministry of Transport, the northern

road engineer, Mr. Alfred J. Lyddon, of Leeds, presiding. Mr. Alfred 1118

E. trookes, the county surveyor and engineer was present. Amongst the authorities represented at the conference were Hettenk Urban, Houghton Urban, Houghton Rural, and Chester-le-Street Rural Councils, The Ministry, the chairman intimated, was anxious that road improvements should be carried out by the highway authorities in the way of reconstruction, so that motorbus traffic, especially, could be borne without the surface damage which was at present occasioned. This could be remedied by using improved material. The assembly carefully discussed the problem, both from the point of view of suitable materials and from the financial aspect, and are to submit schemes to the Ministry with a view to effecting the improvements. There is no doubt that thepresent state of many of .the northern roads is _causing undue wear and tear on the motor vehicles which run over them, whilst, coaches cannot, use certain routes without inconveniencing passengers.,
