Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Sales of trucks and artics rose by nearly 17% last year to 52,261, the highest figure since the 1989 peak of 69,234, according to figures released last week by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

But industry observers predict that the growth rate will fall this year to between 1.3% (53,000 units), as forecast by the SMMT; to 7.15% (56,000 units), as predicted by Iveco Ford Truck.

Leyland Daf, last year's market leader with 10,599 units registered (compared with Iveco Ford's 10,117) is more cautious, predicting a growth rate of 3.3% (54,000 units).

The rate of growth in truck and artic sales tailed off towards the end of last year with a 2.1% fall in registrations in December compared with the same month in 1994.

Much of this fall was contributed by the four-axle rigid sector, largely because the main buyer of eight-leggers is the construction industry, which shows no sign of recovering from the building slump.
