Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A CLOSE COUPLED load divider 1-t dolly which, in effect, converts a four-wheel tractive unit into a six-wheeler so that it can handle a heavier semitrailer without overloading the driving axle, has been developed by R. A. Dyson and Co. Ltd., Liverpool, 8. The dolly, which weighs 32 cwt., is suitable for a maximum imposed load from the semitrailer of 16 tons, whilst a lighter model suitable for loadings of up to 12 tons is to be marketed also.

The dolly has a kingpin at its forward end which engages in the jaws of the tractive-unit fifth-wheel, and a Ferodolined wedge locates in the "V" opening to prevent the dolly from rotating, whilst at the same time allowing rock in a vertical plane to give load compensation between the two axles. The position of the dolly's fifth-wheel determines the weight distribution between the two axles, and a dolly with a fifth-wheel which is adjustable for position can be supplied if required.

Semi-elliptic springs form the suspension of the dolly axle, which carries 10.00-20 (14-ply) tyres, and 15.5 by 6 in. two leading-shoe brakes are fitted, these being actuated through a two-line airpressure system. A screw-type parking brake is incorporated, and there is a single centrally mounted screw down support leg with remote control from the rear of the dolly. The dolly is 10 ft. 1.5 in. long and 7 ft. 6 in. wide, and the first example has been built for M.A.T. Transport Ltd., London, to enable the company to haul its Dyson 30-ton machinery carrier with an Atkinson fourwheeled tractive unit.
