The figures show that in the then 17 member states deaths involving HGVs fell from 4,586 in 1996 to 3,350 in 2005 — a 27% reduction. In the UK, deaths involving HGVs fell from 605 to 510 in the same period.
ERSO says the average HGV fatality rate in 2005 was 11.5 per million population, ranging from 5.7 in Italy to 37.2 in Estonia. Car accidents (including drivers and passengers) accounted for 53% of all fatalities in the same year. ranging from 29 per million in the UK to 117 in Luxembourg. However, the period shows a 24.5% reduction in car deaths overall, from 12,469 in 1996 to 9,419 in 2005.
