• Although for many years a subsidiary of a well-known municipal vehicle body engineering company, J. F. Buckingham Ltd, Priory Road, Kenilworth. Warwicks, is now an independent concern, having severed its previous connection.

In its new capacity, J. F. Buckingham has lately produced an 800gal combined gully and cesspit emptier mounted on a Bedford KDS chassis with 135in.wheelbase, and supplied by C. Allen and Son Ltd, Taunton, to the Corporation of Neath.

The tank has a rotating gully-pipe supporting arm mounted on bearings which allow the arm to be swung through 360deg with practically no effort. The arm is counterbalanced by weights connected to a progressive linkage which permits the minimum weight to be used. Contents of street gullies enter the tank via a polypropylene connection to eliminate corrosion.

The pump has built-in mechanism to change from vacuum to pressure, needing only one air line leading from pump to tank. The standard pump exhausts 106 Cu ft per min and has a large reservoir; it operates at only 950 rpm.

The equipment also has a dual cut-out system. The primary cut-out is sited in the tank; if it malfunctions liquid will not flow directly into the pump and cause damage, but will flow into an external chamber which is fitted with a sight gauge, a strainer and a secondary cut-out that comes into use if and when the chamber fills. This chamber also acts as an anti-syphon device.
