Newport told to reclaim fuel rebate

• Officials of Newport Corporation Transport were asked if they were aware that almost £40,000 had not been claimed in fuel rebate when the department successfully applied to the South Wales Traffic Commissioners in Cardiff to raise most fares by lp. An application for a 2p increase on three small routes was refused.
This was stated after Mr Gordon Kaye, principal assistant in the finance department, claimed that the undertaking would have an estimated overall deficiency of £100,000 at the end of the current financial year.
Mr Kaye said he understood this was due to a disagreement with the Traffic Commissioners on the content of the claim but he would be very surprised if fuel rebate applications had not been submitted quarterly. The undertaking was also criticized for not endeavouring to increase its revenue on private hire and contract work.
Mr Frank Thorp, general manager, said that although there had been an increase in revenue since the last fare increase in January 1971 when a 4p flat fare wak introduced, the considerable reluctance of short-distance passengers had not been sufficiently taken into account.
