Show exhibitors urged to 'sell'

THE CV SHOW Partnership has urged exhibitors not to play into the hands of the gloom-mongers" and start to sell again at the NEC show in 2009.

Just weeks after Mercedes-Benz, lveco, MAN, Volvo, Renault, Isuzu, Scania and Oaf pulled out of exhibiting at the Birmingham NEC from 28 April 2009, the show organisers have urged exhibitors not to give up.

Roger King (right), Road Haulage Association (RHA) chief executive, says: 'It's tempting to give up on 2009, to fold up one's tent and walk away, but this would be playing into the hands of the gloom-mongers.

"The CV Show 2009 represents not just a beacon of hope, but a blaze of opportunity, a chance to draw a line and start to sell again." The RHA, along with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE), make up the CV Show Partnership.

King argues that the current falling once of fuel, with the duty rise excepted, is reducing operating costs, which is leading to guarded optimism from hauliers.

"If we can drive down the current 12ppl on average surcharge on diesel, and our referral to the OFT on this might help, this will further reduce operating costs.

"I believe the CV Show in April is strategically placed to capitalise on this, and that new business potential is considerable."
