* Azerbaijan has signed the T1R Convention. Customs offices on the country's borders with Georgia, Russia, Turkey, Iran and Turkmenistan are now open to trucks carrying TIR carnets.

* Dover-based ferry booking agency Harbour Shipping has introduced the VIA toll credit card for use on the Italian motorway network.

Hauliers carrying electronic goods into Finland now have to be more specific on TIR carnets. The exact number of packages, what they are and their EU code number must be displayed.
* Austrian police are reported to be strictly enforcing regulations on belly and cat walk tanks.
* The Hungarian government has lifted driving restrictions for heavy trucks (above 7.5 tonnes). Drivers on international work can now move on any day of the week until 1 March 1998.
* Romania has re-categorised the BucharestGiurgiu road to allow 40 tonne trucks—it was limited to 32 tonnes.
* A visa is not required for Bulgaria as long as the stay is for fewer than 30 days.
