After finding the normal issue of wheel nut brace (incorporated in the starting handle) inadequate and awkward to use, he decided to use an old brace drill and an old nut socket which would fit his wheel nuts. The adjusting boss was welded to the shaft of the brace, then the nut socket was welded to the boss. Now, says Mr. Smith, he has a good, sturdy wheel nut brace which gives him far more leverage and is easier to use, Comments Handyman: In earlier days such a wheel brace was part of most car tool kits. No doubt fewer roadside stoppages have lowered the quality of the tool now supplied. I certainly agree with Mr. Smith that the modern apology for a brace is often pathettc.
