COUR covered bays handling eight
lorries simultaneously are built into the most modern cold store in Europe, which has just been opened by the London Cold Storage Co. Ltd. at Nine Elms, on the south bank of the Thames. As well as road transport it is railconnected and accepts barges at a private jetty. The road haulage industry's "Turn that Lorry Round" campaign is said to have influenced the company in the design of the loading facilities.
The store is for meat and general produce and is available to frozen-food processors and distributors; it has a twomillion cubic-foot capacity and can hold over 16,000 tons of food. FlYdrautic dock levellers are used at-the lorry bays and electric pallet trucks and other mechanical aids are widely used.
