Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1'0 be employed mainly for the transport of grain from docks to storage depots, a self-discharging bulk container has been acquired by Wilson and Hood, Ltd., Bridgnorth. Based on a Commer 7-ton forward-control oilengined chassis with a Universal Power Drives trailing-axle bogie extension, the vehicle was supplied by J. Sharratt and Sons. Ltd., West Bromwich, Rootes distributors.

The container is of the demountable type, and special features include the use of auger-discharge equipment powered by a Villiers petrol engine of 4 h.p. This is outrigged at the rear.

Rated to carry 12 tons, the container has a capacity of 525 Cu. ft. The auger can be used to discharge the load at a rate of 20 tons an hour. Bolted to the wooden floor of the aluminium platform body, the container may be removed by an overhead hoist or transferred manually to a raised deck of suitable height after the sub-frame has been jacked up and equipped with casters.

Gravity Discharge Permitted

As an alternative to using the auger mechanism, the grain can be discharged by gravity through chutes below the base. of the container and a longitudinal opening in the vehicle floor provided by a removable board.

Built by N. Tamplin and Co., Ltd., Birdham, Chichester, the body comprises eight standard straight-sided sections with a hopper-type base, and is mounted on a robust angle-iron sub-frame. Upright supports are formed by the bolted joints of the sections, and internal bracing members are employed.

A full-length auger duct is located centrally under the floor of the container, and is belt-driven by the rear-mounted power unit to discharge the material some 9 in. behind the rear cross-member of the chassis. The grain is fed to the duct through four slide-type traps manually operated by transverse rods from the near side.

A duplicate set of slides enables the material to be discharged by gravity, the push-pull rods being operated by handgrips on the off side.

Complete with discharge equipment, c20

the container Weighs 25 cwt. and has overall length, width and height measurements ' of 20 ft. 6 in., 7 ft. and 5 ft. 7+ in. respectively.

Four eyebrackets are fitted to receive the hooks of the hoisting gear. Weather protection is afforded by a canvas cover supported on nine roof sticks. Spillage of material is prevented by radiused longitudinal members at cant-rail level, which extend inwards about 9 in.

The Unipower conversion is of the swinging-beam type, based on Commer components, and extends the wheelbase from 13 ft. 6 in. to 15 ft. 7+ in. Other non-standard equipment includes 9.00 by 20 tyres instead of the normal 8.25 by 20 type, and the standard four-speed gearbox is replaced by a five-speed unit.

Access to the container is provided by a removable rear door, mounted on four clamp-type hinges, which may be opened upwards or downwards.

A demountable tipping body for the bulk transport of grain and like traffic has been developed by Tamplin, and is available in three different sizes. The body has its own frame so that it may be fitted on a platform vehicle and taken off when traffic requirements alter seasonally.

The sides are made of mild-steel sheet and are rustproofed. There are no struts inside and Huckbolt fasteners are used. At the rear, in addition to an adjustable outlet chute, a door 2 ft. 6 in. wide may be provided to _allow sacked goods to be loaded. Canvas covers for the top are quickly removable.

The tipping gear is of Edbro manufacture, and for bodies intended to carry up to 7 tons, twin-ram hand-operated hydraulic gear is provided, For heavier weights, powered tipping gear is recommended. With such equipment, the oil feed has a quick-release coupling.

Each of the three bodies is 6 ft. 10 in. wide and 5 ft. 6 in. high, but their respective lengths are 13 ft. 8 in., 16 ft. 2 in. and 18 ft. 8 in. Capacities of the three models are 332 cu. ft. (five bays), 399 cu. ft. (six bays), and 465 cu. ft. (seven bays), and the respective prices are £376, £417 and £458.

The rear door, as described, costs an extra £27 12s., and power take-off drive for hydraulic tipping gear is approximately £85. Spill boards to increase capacity by 10 per cent, can be fitted to special order.
