Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DESIGNED primarily for oil engines of medium size, a new starter has been produced by C.A.V., Ltd., London, W.3. It differs from axial: and 'inertiaengaged types in that the pinion is engaged by means of a forked lever operated by a solenoid mounted on the yoke.

The solenoid brings the starter pinion slowly into mesh with the flywheel, limits the current during the initial engagement, and puts the starter on full power when it is completely engaged.

Between the armature and the pinion is a clutch which is incorporated to prevent damage through overloading or overrunning. The starter is available for flanged outboard mounting only.

CONVERSIONS OF BEDFORDS 1ARIANTS of Bedford 10-12-cwt.

V and 20-25-cwt. models, special pickups and builders' trucks are being made by B. Walker and Son, Ltd., 1 Gammons Lane, Watford.

The 10-12-cwt, pick-up has a steel body of 56 Cu. ft. and a let-down tailboard. Unlike those of the standard Bedford model, the cab doors open on hinges. The builders' truck, based on the same chassis, has a drop-sided body of conventional construction. A timber bolster is an optional extra.

The 20-25-cwt. pick-up, which has a capacity of 78 cu. ft., is of welded construction. The drop-sided version of this vehicle has a loading height of just over 3 ft.

Hoops and tilts are available for all these vehicles. The price of the 10-12cwt. pick-up in primer is £463, and that of the 10-12-cwt. builders' truck £468. Both prices exclude purchase tax at £60 16s.

A MATTER OF TIME ACCORD1NG to B.I. Transport, Ltd., the time of little over half an hour taken to unload 131 tons from the Joseph Rank bulk-flour vehicle by the blower system (The Commercial Motor, November 27) is the same as that normally required by two men to unload this amount of flour at a plant

u12 bakery when transported in bags. The gain in handling time is, it is stated, in connection with the work in the bakery. The charge for each bag is 5s., which is returnable after the bag has been used.

When Mr. J. Rank, joint assistant managing director of Joseph Rank, Ltd„ referred to the possible advantages of the bulk-intake method, he emphasized that these would benefit only the bakeries, the vehicle °mating costs being increased by the greater capital outlay.

SILVER CYPHERS LEGAL

'THE Minister of Transport has made regulations authorizing the use of silver or light grey as well as white letters and figures on the number plates of motor vehicles (except where the marks can be illuminated at night by transparency or translucency) and on hackney-carriage plates.

The regulations, which come into force today, regularize the position which arose as a result of the decision in the Glasgow Sheriff's Court earlier this year that "white in relation to vehicle number plates did not include the colour of aluminium.
