TRANSPORT MINISTER Lynda Chalker has promised that the problem caused by alkali-aggregate reaction on some bridges on motorways and trunk roads in England was being treated very seriously.
She said that it would be dealt with "long before it poses a risk to the travelling public."
So far, AAR has been definitely identified in 21 bridges, suspected in a further 100 while there are also another 230 which are believed to contain potentially reactive materials.
Mrs Chalker said that particular attention was being paid to areas where the risk could be higher.
