Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I was informed recently by the local taxation officer that as from the end of this year I would be entitled only to one set of trade plates, and he gave the reason as some sort of law which was passed on January 4 this year.

As I have six vehicles of varying sizes in use, from a Land-Rover to heavy Scammell, this worries me.

Would you tell me if this information is correct and if not what steps I can take to renew my two sets of trade plates at the end of the year, bearing in mind that the person who told me this is the person responsible for issuing trade licences.

AWe cannot understand why your local taxation officer should say that after the end of the year you would be entitled only to one set of trade licences.

Provided you qualify for the issue of a trade licence as a motor trader as defined in the regulations (ie a manufacturer or repairer of, or dealer in, mechanically propelled vehicles ) — which you do, you may have more than one licence.

Section 16(6) of the Vehicles (Excise) Act 1971 states that "Nothing in this section shall operate to prevent a person entitled to take out a trade licence from holding two or more trade licences."

We know of no law or regulation concerning this matter which came into effect on January 4.
