W. Greer Johnston, 31, an accountant, is to take over the Sutherland Transport and Trading Co Ltd, Lairg, from September 1. He has been managing director for two years. The Grosvenor Estate trustees said in a statement that the second Duke of Westminster acquired Sutherland Transport in 1951 as part of his programme to create new work in Sutherland. "It is now appropriate in the interests of the community that the trustees should provide an opportunity for local ownership and management," they added.

Jack Edwin Mansfield, 38, is to take charge of commercial vehicle sales at Goodliffe Garages (Croydon) Ltd, sole retail distributor in South London for Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles. Before joining Goodliffe, Mr Mansfield held a similar position for a large transport firm in Guildford.

Jack Fecitt, 45, who started as a driver with Jameson Transport Ltd and was for 14 years manager of the company's Southampton depot, then becoming sales manager for 12 months of Smith of Maddiston when that firm took over Jameson, this week became manager of the newly opened Southampton depot of Tonevale Transport Ltd, Taunton.

P. G. Dewhurst, assistant chief engineer of Ribble Motor Services Ltd, has been appointed chief engineer to Lancashire United Transport Ltd as from January 1 1973, to replace A. H. Gemaey who is retiring on December 31 1972. Mr. Dewhurst will join LUT as chief engineer designate on November 1.

Wilfred Gannicliffe, 36, has been appointed traffic manager of the Co-operative Wholesale Society's Transport Group which has a fleet of more than 350 vehicles and also sub-contracts to other carriers. Mr Gannicliffe was transport manager of Plessey of Liverpool, and assistant traffic officer of Metal Box at Speke, near Liverpool, before joining the CWS Transport Group in 1968 as assistant traffic manager. Ronald Speakman wh joined Gupwells Transpo Contracts Ltd in 1958 a an apprentice mechanic Leeds has been appointe general manager of th Birmingham-based conpany which is an assoc ate of A. J. Gupwe Ltd. His father, Harol Speakman, is depc manager at Gupwell' Leeds depot.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the death of James IGilbert.

Mr Gilbert, 53, director and general mana ger of the Birmingham and Midland Motc Omnibus Co Ltd (Midland Red), an NI31 subsidiary company, died on the Isle of Arra while on holiday. He started his career as £40 a year clerk with the Great Wester Railway, and joined the bus industry in 1946 He successively held the posts of gm of A Timpson & Sons Ltd (from 1954), Eas Midland Motor Services Ltd (from 1962) South Wales Transport Co Ltd (from 1 9641 and East Kent Road Car Co Ltd (from 1968) Mr Gilbert was chief gm responsible for Cit of Oxford Motor Services, Potteries Moto Traction Co Ltd and Midland Red.
