• British Railways announced on Friday that they plan to withdraw the freight wagon services from Southampton Docks next spring. A Southern Region spokesman said it had not been possible to bridge the widening gap between declining revenue and increasing costs. He added that it will still be possible to handle rail freight through the Freightliner depots and the Region's Full Load Depot at Mulford's Sidings, just outside the docks area, though each requires road transport to and from the dockside.
