MR. COTTON, MR. CLORE AND THE NEW M2

TWMotorways? This is the question 0 lanes or three for Britain's

posed by the front-page story in the August edition of " Highway Times," published by the Roads Campaign Council. It is reported that Messrs. Cotton and Clore, the property tycoons, plan to re-develop the former Admiralty dockyard at Sheerness.

This development is likely to have a significant effect upon M2, the Medway Motorway. The M2 will have four traffic lanes with no room allowed for widening the motorway in the future. One of the partners in the Cotton-Clore plan is Sir Andrew MacTaggart who says: " The M2 will be out-of-date before it opens."

Sir Andrew refers to the fact that there are only two lanes on this motorway. " What incredible folly not to build the M2 at least to the same standard as the Ml with its six traffic lanes" says the article.
