Haulier Faces Charges Alleging that He Forged Records

ALEYLAND haulier and his son were committed for trial at Chorley, Lanes, last week on summonses alleging the forging of records of hours worked for a goods vehicle. Bail was allowed.
Wallace Barton, of Sandringham Avenue, was accused of forging documents purporting to be current records in respect of a motor vehicle and of uttering certain forged documents. His father, James Barton, of the same address, was accused of aiding and abetting the alleged offences.
Prosecuting, Mr. D. W. Fazackerley said there were obvious irregularities in the way the vehicle, owned by the defendants, had been used, but they were summary offences. The prosecution felt they should not be proceeded with as the summonses before the court were sufficiently serious. He alleged the records produced to a traffic examiner by the defendants had been made out by them and not by the driver.
Sidney Openshaw, of Westgate, Burnley, said he was employed as a driver bY the defendants and kept records of journeys made, On April 24 a traffic examiner showed him some records, but they were not in his handwriting Answering Mr. J. Coffey, defending, Openshaw said James Barton refused to make him a partner in the business, and as a result he left their employ. He had reported breaches of conditions of a B licence to the enforcement officer.
