IT is difficult to assess how much influence county and other local councils have on the Government; it. must, however, amount to something. When, therefore, they appear unanimous on ally matter, one cannot see how the Government can avoid giving this opinion serious consideration.
These bodies recently, as reported, made very plain their views that rural bus services could best be sustained by remission of fuel tax. They thus aligned themselves with the minority report of the Jack Committee, and with thebus operators. Now what will Mr. Marples do (if anything) about the unwanted Jack report favouring subsidies?
