EMPLOYERS in the North-Western ILA Area have put forward to the Central Board their conclusions with regard to wages. They are understood to have expressed themselves in favour of the adoption of the scale of the National Joint Conciliation Board, pins the 3s. granted, 12 months ago, for the interim period until July, 1940.

Meanwhile, the men's representatives have put forward an application for changed conditions, particularly in respect of extra pay for night work and higher rates of overtime for Sunday Work and hours worked in excess of 10 on any one day.

Concerning "statutory attendants and mates," the employers consider that the words " and mates " should be deleted from the Board's proposals. On many small vehicles the mate is carried, not because the driver needs any assistance in loading and unloading, but because it is desirable that someone should be on the vehicle when the driver's duties take him away. The proposition is made that this type of work should be divided into two classes, (a) statutory, and (b) nonstatutory. In this way a distinction is made between the skilled attendant and the unskilled attendant. For the latter, the suggestion has been made of an appropriate scale of wages.

ALONG vacation has been arranged as regards traffic courts in the North Western Area.' A public' inquiry and a public sitting, both on August 1 in Manchester, completed a continuous run of courts and finished up some tag

Although no definite policy has been promulgated on behalf of the railA24 way companies, as regards their promise to cease opposing certain applications, there has certainly been less obstruction at recent inquiries, and they are prepared to accept an interpretation of this fact in their favour.
