Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

100-ton Load Does Not Damage Road.

At a meeting of the highways committee of Stretford Ulban District Council it was reported that a load of 100 tons was conveyed through the district, from Barton to Hollinwood, over several main and district roads and bridges, but that no resulting damage had been observed.

This statement offers further proof of the fact that the load itself is not the main consideration, hut that the number of wheels over which it is distributed is of prime importance.

Three-wheeled Collectors Popular.

The Colt Major three-wheeler, produced by Karrier, Motors, Ltd., Huddersfield, is finding increasing favour in municipal circles for the -work of refuse collection, and the company has re• cently supplied machines of this type to Manchester and Newcastle Corporations. The former already Operates two such vehicles and has bought four others, whilst the latter, which operates various types of Karrier municipal motor, has bought two machines.

The four vehicles for Manchester accommodate bodies of 6 cubic yd. capacity, those for Newcastle being of 5 cubic yd. capacity. All the bodies have sliding steel covers in four sections, two per side, and for tipping hand-operated gear is used.

A London Decorated-vehicle Event.

We have received from the clerk of the Wood Green Borough Council, Town Hall, Wood Green, London, N., particulars of a decorated car and vehicle competition, to be held in connection with charter celebrations on Wednesday, September 20, 1933. There will be a class for trade vans and lorries, in which three prizes will be awarded. The entrance fee for trade vehicles is 2s. 6d.

Inquiries concerning the event should be addressed to the joint honorary secretaries, Mr. A. B. Featherstone and Mr. Councillor E. J. Anderton, Town Hall, Wood Green, N.22.

Parks for Lorries Urgently Required. The roads committee of Warwick County Council recommends that the attention of the Ministry of Transport should be drawn to the urgent need for parking places for lorries on several roads in the county, where considerable obstruction is caused by parking lorries on the highways, particularly at night. The places at which such facilities are especially required include Dunchurch, Meriden and Willoughby.

The chief constable states that it is a regular practice for up to 30 lorries to stop at Meriden practically every night for the drivers to change vehicles. Some time ago a proposal to construct a parking place at Dunchurch was put before the Ministry of Transport, but the Ministry refused to make any contribution towards the cost of the scheme. Rochdale's New Fire Station.

A large new fire station, which has recently been completed in Rockdale, has accommodation for six Leyland engines and six ambulances. A feature of the new premises is the watchroom, which contains a special electrical switchboard. The operation of one switch rings the alarm bell in the firemen's houses, the workshops and stations, lights the station and the staircase of each fireman's house, opens the station doors, starts the engine of a fire pump and records the time of the alarm.
