ONEof the most useful adjunets to the efficient operation of a commercial vehicle, particularly if it be oneemployed in such work as the carrying of builders' materials, road metal, coal end other loads of this description, is the tipping gear.

Many types are on the market, and for those who do not wish to run to the expense of power-operated detrices there are some very efficient hand-screw gears obtainable. Amongst these some which present many excellent features are those supplied by the Spenborough Ergineering Co., Valley Works, Hecktnondwike, Yorks.

One type is a runback gear as fitted to the one-ton Morris. It is operated through a train of spur gears and works on two ball bearings at the hinge, very little effort being required to place the body in the tipping position, and, when down, it is locked by a safety device, whilst two quarter-elliptic springs take the shocks when the body is being tipped. Telescopic gears for medium-weight chassis and extra heavy gears for large loads are also constructed.

tors, is that in the sides of either draytype bodies or those with detachable sides they use a standard section of steel channel, and at each end of this they weld in a 1-in, strip finished off to a good square clean-cut aPpearance. This channel is inserted with the edges on the outside, and is bolted to the ash or oak cross-bearers.

The standard screw gears are constructed of two angle irons, which can easily be fixed to any chassis. On to these is bolted the swape shaft brackets. The bevel gears for the screws are of cast-steel, and the wheel bracket, on the top of which is mounted a ballthrust washer, takes the weight of the screw and of the load. An important point is that this bracket does not fulcrum on the swape shaft, but is supported .on two stout bushes protruding from the bearings of the shaft, thus avoiding all friction on the shaft.

The mild-steel screws are proportioned according to the size and capacity of the gear, and are cut with pitches suitable for their different diameters.

On to the body is bolted a plate with a central pin, this carrying another plate on which is mounted the nut. The arrangement allows a body to align itself when unevenly loaded. A recent improvement in the wheel bracket is that this forms part of a spherical bearing, which is recessed to carry a rocking plate, and, should the chassis be on uneven ground while being tipped, this keeps the ball race in perfect alignment with the screw..

In the smaller types of gear a ballsocket body .plate and cap, which receives a phosphor-bronze ball nut, is utilized. This acts on the same principle, as the device in the larger gears, but is cheaper to produce, and this reduction has been passed on to the buyer ; for instance. the Ford gear, complete with hinge bar and fittings, retails at

£5 17s. 6d., the Morris gear at £6 3s. 6d. and so on, up to a 10-ton gear, which costs 135 10s.

Every facility is given to customers to have their gears fitted to existing bodywork, or new bodies can be supplied complete with the tipping gear.

For the benefit of customers in the London and south-eastern areas, the company have made arrangements to have their gears fitted at the works of Blue Belle Transport, Ltd., 48-45, Acre Lane, Brixton, London, S.W.2, who held a full range of tipping gears in stock so that immediate deliveries can be given. Incidentally, the makers &sire to enter into arrangements with traders in other leading centres who have special facilities for fitting up gears.

Amongst municipal authorities SPcnborough gears have proved very popular —Doncaster, Edinburgh, Great Yarmouth a.nd a large number of urban district councils and public bodies already make use of them.

The double-screw tipping gears are made in three size& with capacities ranging from 3 tons to 6 tons, whilst telescopic gears can be obtained in two sizes, the single-telescopic screw for 4 tons and 5 tons and the double-telescopic

screw for loads up to S tons. For smaller vehielea single-screw tipping gears are quite efficient, and these are made in three types, with, load capacities of from 30 cwt. to 70 cwt.
