just months after a bitter dispute there appeared to have been resolved (CM 1-7 1-7 November 2001).

The United Road Transport Union and the Transport & General Workers Union have raised concerns over a number of issues relating to the introduction last year of a complex pay system, and particularly over pay for Saturday working, night shifts and bank holidays.

URTU negotiating officer Graham Bird says a joint meeting with the T&G and P&O management has been provisionally set up for 19 April to talk about the pay issues and the company's grievance procedure.

Bird hopes to resolve these issues through negotiation but does not rule out a ballot for industrial action if the talks break down. -If we don't get some of the problems sorted out the lads will boat the end of their tether," he says.

Last year's pay dispute between 90 drivers and P&O Trans European, which led to two one-day strikes, centred on the wording of the pay agreement.

The row erupted when P&G Trans European tried to harmonise pay and conditions across all the UK's spot and affreightment division sites, which include Middlesbrough and Uverpool.

A spokesman for P&O Trans European says no agreement has been reached with the unions but he confirms that discussions continue.
