Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Do not under-specify your winch— that's the main me%sage from the winch suppliers. The weight of the equipment to be recovered, the gradient it is being winched up and the ground surface all have an effect on the pulling power required.

Maximum line pull (the dead weight the winch could lift off the ground) and the rolling pull (the maximum weight on wheels the winch can pull) are the main specification criteria. Line pull is often quoted in pounds because many winches are US imports.

The choice between electric and hydraulic winches is often determined by how much weight needs to be pulled.

Electric winches are cheaper, according to Superwinch, but limited to around 14.000lb on a 24V electrical system (less on 12V vehicles because of high current draw). A hydraulic winch costs more to fit, even on a vehicle with a PTO, because it requires control valves, pipes and fittings. On the other hand it a can deliver a line pull of up to 30.0001b.

Superwinch's 1.4kW/12V Husky worm-drive electric winch offers a maximum line pull of 13,5001b at a speed of 0.7m/min with a current draw of 360A.

Bushey Hall's Plantmaster is a side-mounted winch set into the body floor which can be electrically or hydraulically powered. The winch is not exposed to the equipment being loaded, and line pull can be across the trailer as well as front to back. Pull capacities are said to range from 3.6-9.0 tonnes.

US-made Warn Winches are now sold in the UK by lifting equipment specialist Arbil Automotive. Warns heavy-duty range includes the electric M15000 and the hydraulically powered Series 20: they feature stepped winch drums to allow for even rope layering. An optional tension plate prevents the rope from tangling during free spool or power in, while a roller unit protects the rope from

damage when pulling at an angle. The remote air clutch features a springengaged fail-safe to prevent accidental release of the load.
