• The London Borough of Greenwich's much heralded lorry ban will start in May on a six-month trial.
The scheme, which was first mooted in July 1995, is designed to cut the number of trucks travelling through the borough in an attempt to combat pollution caused by high traffic levels and local geography.
Vehicles above 7.5 tonnes GVW will be banned from the A206 Romney Road from 6 May for six months, effectively forcing transiting trucks to go via the A2 or the Dartford Tunnel.
The ban was
delayed while Greenwich awaited the approval of the director of transport for London. The Freight Transport and Road Haulage Associations have both been consulted.
Heavier trucks will still be allowed throughout the town centre to make deliveries; turning areas will be provided for vehicles entering Trafalgar Road.
In 1993 Tunnel Refineries, one of the largest hauliers in the area, imposed a voluntary ban on its 40 vehicles in a bid to ease the congestion and pollution that has plagued the area.
The ban will be reviewed at the end of the trial and, if successful, may become permanent.
