• The owner of Kidderminster-based Gil Leighton (Transport Contractor) is closing down his 21-year-old firm which was only just in profit this year.
Next week, when the general haulier ceases trading, 15 drivers and two mechanics will lose their jobs. Its fleet of 15 tractors and 21 trailers will be sold by auction on 20 April.
Owner Geoff Leighton is disillusioned with high transport costs and low rates. He says he may now set up a freight forwarding firm and in the meantime is looking for a company to lease his site, which has new workshops and a 57,000-litre fuel tank.
