• Major plant equipment manufacturers, such as Caterpillar, Terex and Volvo BM, are noticeably absent from the International Construction Exhibition (ICE) held this week at the NEC. The story is becoming a familiar one — they could not justify the cost. However, there are many who apparently can.

Tanker manufacturer Whale has plans to penetrate the road glitter market and has already sold its first Whale Blazer to a local authority. "Extensive use of stainless steel, polypropylene and hot zinc spray, applied properly, will extend life and reliability" claims the company's managing director Michael Fisher.

The vehicle offers five body capacities ranging from 2.8 to 9.3m3 and gives an application rate of up to 40gm/m2. Its spinner is retractable and is located beneath the gritter

body while a wide steel valance protects all of the chassis-mounted components. The discharge belt and spreading spinner have separate drives; both are controlled from within the cab.

On the lveco Ford Truck stand Johnston exhibited its 10,000th road sweeper body, mounted on a 1311 Cargo chassis. Special features in dude dual control, cabmounted master control panel and a wide sweep brush offering variable brush pressure.

Nissan's FD/35T turbocharged diesel engine is now available to replace Land Rover's vee eight petrol unit. The four cylinder unit produces a similar amount of power but gives about 10% greater torque and is claimed to perform better with heavy loads at speed. The 3.3 litre engine is also offered with an exhaust brake and 24V electrics — all for about £4,000 exchange.

Truck Mixer Services showed an example of its small capacity truck mixers suitable for concrete and mortar operations. The TM 1.52 model, with 3rnm Corten steel 1.5m2 mixer drum, adds just 1.25 tonnes to the unladen weight of a 3.2m wheelbase 7.5 tonne chassis.
