Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Leyland Redline Terrier range which is available in four basic models each with a choice of wheelbases covering a variety of applications ranging from 6,610 kg (6.5 tons) to 9,960 kg (9.5 tons) gvw, is a popular one with operators looking for a lightweight truck.

With the exception of its high pressure, full power hydraulic brake system, which is unique on a vehicle of this type, the Terrier chassis is entirely conventional with a minimum of lubricating points and is likely to appeal to the operator who services his own vehicles.

CM recently visited the Kenning Truck Centre workshops at Kay Street, Manchester, to cover the routine 19,300 km (12,000-mile) service of a Terrier.

However, operators thinking about or indeed carrying out their own maintenance might be advised to consider their cost-effectiveness against that of a modern workshop such as the Kenning one.

Proper service costing must have an allowance to cover the type of snags likely to crop up even with routine jobs such as this service. Our particular Terrier was a typical case; the vehicle, a boxvan with 39,000 km (over 24,000 miles) on the clock had been regularly serviced from new, but removal of the front nearside brake drum revealed a defective outer wheel-bearing and brake cylinder.

The replacement of these parts is straightforward, but the inner wheel bearing stayed on the stub axle instead of coming away with the brake drum, and was drawn off with a puller, which meant that it had to be replaced.

Although these components were to hand in the stores this one wheel took more time than the other three, which makes the point about the difficulty of effective costing of maintenance work by operators.

The 12,000-mile service is covered by a 46-point checklist which Kenning believes is even more comprehensive than that required by the manufacturer. A time of one and a half days is allowed and •the standard charge is £38.98 for labour plus charged materials such as fuel/air filters and lubricating oil.

Indications are that operators of this class of vehicle faced with rising costs are taking advantage of the fixed labour rates and times offered by specialists such as Kenning.

In addition to the above charges this particular vehicle also needed the following replacements: outer wheelbearing £3.05, inner wheel-bearing £6.50, hub seal 19p, wheel cylinder £6.11, and a brake-lining-wear indicator switch £3.24—a total cost of £19.09.
