As the economy shows signs of recovery, Essex-based used truck dealer Hanbury Riverside is poised to take advantage.

Words: Dominic Perry

HANBURY RIVERSIDE dealership chairman Glyn Davies (pictured) believes there are signs of life in the used truck market, and that his company is well-placed to take advantage of increasing demand.

He says: "The used truck business is a good [economic] barometer — when there's nothing happening, there's nothing happening with us either.

"Enquiry levels are relatively high, and we are doing some deals; even in August we did much more than we had expected."

He says Hanbury Riverside has continued to buy stock throughout the recession, so it will be in a healthy position when the upturn arrives, not least that the used market will benefit from the production changes instituted by truck manufacturers.

"When things recover, truck-makers won't be able to gear up quickly enough. They're going to have to charge higher prices due to the value of the euro, and this will drive demand for recent late vehicles," he says.

"Truck values have dropped, but they are going to come back. The past 18 months have been challenging for all of us. We have been lucky in that we are not highly geared with no borrowings and have had cash to buy stock." •
