Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

David Fox Transport reckons it costs about 12,000 per vehicle for the air management kit and the AMC system to control it.

The company uses a wide variety of trailers, however, and MD David Fox felt that more money than this was being Wasted through non-aerodynamic running.

Fox has been testing his highest trailers, loaded and empty, to track the difference the CVT system makes. "We are getting 9.36mpg without the air management kit on a run to Dartford and 10.5mpg with it; that's an improvement of 12.1%. Over 65,000 miles, that's a saving of 800 gallons or 13,000 per year," he says.

The company also checked its East-West routes. "We've done a trial both ways on the M62 in windy weather, fully loaded to -tonnes with a double-deck trailer,' says Fox. "Without the air kit, we achieved 6,9mpg; With it 7.7mpg — that's an 11.5% improvement." David Fox Transport is convinced that with the CVT kit it will achieve these benefits on every run, On another trial the company sent out two DAFs with maximumheight trailers — vehicles that normally achieve the same consumption with standard air deflectors.

One XF95 was sent out without its air deflector, while a CF85 was fitted with a full air management system and high-lift AMC kit, extended to a height of 15ft 5in.

The vehicles made a round trip from Middlesbrough via Lutterworth, Telford and Washington (540 miles). The XF95 without the air deflector achieved 7.5mpg, while the CF85 with the full works ran at 9.9mpg.

The adjustable air management system saved 171 and 32% fuel compared with not using an aerodynamic kit at all.
