FOWLER WELCH has cemented its move into the container sector with the acquisition of Felixstowebased operator Bawdsey Haulage for an undisclosed sum.

The Spalding-based ambient and chilled operator says that clients had increasingly been demanding an end-to-end service for imports, and it had already set up a small office in Felixstowe to co-ordinate the work.

However, the deal means that it now has access to an additional 28 tractor units and 75 skeletal trailers to add to its existing fleet of 80 skellies.

Lawrence Shea, Fowler Welch business development manager, says: "It's a growing part of our business that we have got into recently, but our customers are increasingly demanding end-toend solutions with their products." Shea says that the firm will transport the containers, de-van them, store the products, pack them, then deliver them into a retailer's DC. He adds: "We took over the [RF] Fielding business [in 2006] because we could see an opportunity within the ambient market, and its the same with the container sector."

Bawdsey Haulage has a turnover of around £4m per year and employs 45 staff. Former owner and managing director Michael Dabbs will remain with the firm.

In addition, Fowler Welch has opened a new office in Teesport to co-ordinate imports The proximity of large import operations set up by major clients Asda and Tesco is believed to be the main reason for the move.
