• Latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show a small growth in the sale of commercial vehicles in August.

A total of 44,549 CVs were registered in August; a 1.8% increase on the August 1997 figure of 43,779. Truck and artic registrations grew 8% to reach 6,489 units in August, compared with 6,006 in the same month last year.

Leyland Daf led the manufacturers in the truck and artic market, with sales totalling 7,140, up from 5,652 or the year so far. Iveco Ford was runnerup at 6,229.

Total sales of trucks and artics for 1998 to date are 34,504—a substantial increase on the 28,485 sold up until August 1997. Overall CV sales for 1998 total 203,216; up 10% on the 1997 figure.
