• Leeds Corporation's car park in Woodhouse Lane, which was opened last August at a cost of £600,000, is one of the biggest in the country. It was built to cater for 1250 vehicles, but only 150 cars a day are using it, and to boost the facilities the city transport department has made application to the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners to run a 2p a ride ferry service from the car park to the shopping centre.

Commenting, the transport department manager, Mr Thomas Lord, said the car park was an inconvenient distance from the centre and it was hoped the ferry service would attract more motorists to use the park.

It would be a flat-rate charge of 2p as the Corporation was not allowed to run a free bus service. He added: "It will be a further extension of the minibus service at present in operation serving the shopping centre, the two bus stations and the central railway station."

He said they wanted people to get used to the idea of parking and riding and for them to realize it would mean cheaper parking as well as being equally convenient.
