Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Despite the current problems in Ireland, Scottish bus companies report full traffic to the various Irish destinations granted earlier this year. Some re-routeing has been undertaken to avoid the more difficult areas, however.

For example, W. Alexander and Sons Ltd has cut Londonderry and Enniskillen from its Emerald Isle tour, operated in conjunction with Coras lompair Eireann. the Irish Republic state-owned undertaking. Other tours to Portrush and Bundoran have been well supported. Doig's Tours of Greenock, who pioneered this type of operation, has also been working to full capacity, although the company has made emergency arrangements to come into force if and when this should be necessary. The Dublin, Donegal town and Bundoran services are all fully booked.

• Because of a shortage of staff, Sunderland Corporation has curtailed its bus services. Three services have been completely withdrawn and 16 others had their frequencies cut, mostly during off-peak periods. Mr Alan Wright, transport manager, said he was sure the travelling public would prefer a more definite, but less frequent service, rather than put up with the gaps experienced in recent months.
