Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Information is forthcoming from Arrol-Johnston, Ltd., Dumfries, regarding the very useful range of commercial models which this oldestablished concern is now marketing. The company is producing three types of industrial vehicles, the respective load-carrying capacities being 10 cwt.., 15 cwt., and 50 cwt. The photograph reproduced herewith shows the 10-cwt. van, and its sound constructional features are typical of other ArrolJohnston productions. This company has built commercial models for many years, and successfully.

The engine comprises a four-cylinder unit, the cylinders them selves being cast in pairs. They have a bore of 69 mm. and a stroke of 120 mm. The valves are operated by a single camshaft, driven by a noiseless -chain. For cooling the thermo-syphonic system obtains on this model, the waterways being of ample area. Lubricant is supplied to the main bearings by the aid of a pump enclosed in a filter and which, under working conditions, is submerged.

A Sthenos carburetter supplies the engine with explosive mixture, and is fixed in a very accessible position. The plate type of clutch is favoured by this manufacturer, and in this instance consists of

three metal plates of ample area, two of which are lined with thermoid. To ensure accurate alignment both engine and gearbox are mounted on a machine-faced aluminium bed bolted to the pressed steel frame.

The front axle comprises an Isection stamping, and there is ample metal left at each end for supporting the stub axles. The steering pivots are provided with ball-thrust rings, and the road wheels revolve on ball bearing; thus facilitating light steering. Provision is made for four forward speeds, and the gear ratios permit of a speed of 6, 10, 14 and 22 miles per hour, respectively, which is very satisfactory for this type of industrial unit. The live axle is of that construction which provides for all dead-weight to be carried on the outer casing, thereby relieving the internal shafts of driving torque.

Both hand and foot control of the engine are fitted ; the brake and change-speed levers are located within the width of the body. The road wheels are all detachable, and the sizes of the grooved Dunlop tires are 760 mm. by 90 mm. The frame of the body is built of seasoned ash, and the top covered with strong canvas.

The prices of the respective models are as follow : the 10-cwt. van, 2285 complete with all accessories, which comprise acetylene head lamps, paraffin side and tail lamps, horn, and a complete kit of tools ; the 15-cwt. van sells at £325; and the 60-cwt. model, which will shortly be ready for the market, is priced at £485. This latter model has a platform body.
