Drivers' heart tests attacked

TOP doctors have hit out at the present system of testing heavy goods and public service vehicle drivers for heart disease.

And because of the dangers to public safety and the "very serious consequences" that can result from a truck or coach crash they have put forward a series of tough new proposals which they believe should be added to the licensing requirements.

A joint working party of the Royal College of Physicians and the British Cardiac Society published their plan in a report last week.

They claimed that the possible hazard from professional drivers must be looked at closely "since sudden collapse at the wheel is likely to have more serious consequences than would follow from similar illnesses in private drivers."
