ALTHOUGH not yet five years old, European Plant Haulage Ltd claims to be one of the most experienced and versatile hauliers in the heavy indivisible load business in Britain. Its territory of operations has expanded from Bedford into Northern Europe, through the Iron Curtain into Asia Minor and to the Middle East.

In its relatively short life EPH has moved plant and equipment. of all shapes and sizes between Britain and every other European country. Recently it has been more actively engaged in the same type of operation in Iran, Iraq, The Lebanon and Persian Gulf States.

EPH's loads have included bulldozers to Doha and graders to Turkey; industrial washers and nuclear cooling plants from Italy. It has .just completed delivery of five dump-trucks to Tehran, a 25-ton steel roll to Turin and three loads grossing 400 tons to Brescia—returning froth Italy with 21i heat exchangers weighing around 40 tons each.

Just as varied as its loads — "There are no two the same,says Roland (Robbi) Watson, the general manager —is its method of operation; a multiplicity of options are available to the customer. Goods can go throughout by road or road/seal road; they can be accompanied by tractor unit and driver; unaccompanied by tractor unit, but accompanied by a technician; or alternatively tracked on and off. The important thing is that whether a unit goes through or not the load is accompanied by an EP II man, if not a driver then a technician. Those many options undoubtedly require an explanation.

When EPH receives an inquiry a project, manager is appointed to examine the job, design transit methods, compile rates and, hopefully, progress the job to its destination, Depending on the nature, dimensions and weight of the load two or possibly three options are put to the customer. The method, price and delivery times for each are the variables and it is the customer who makes the final choice.

Where a customer wishes the same tractor unit to accompany the load from pick-up point to destination there is no alternative to the road route, and this is the methOd used for European countries. Where, however, the goods are bound for Turkey or the Middle East they may go throughout by road or alternatively be taken to the ferry at Marseilles, Genoa or Venice and dropped there with the low-loader, After shipment to the Mediterranean port the accompanying technician arranges with the company's agent to hire local traction, and thereafter the EPH man chaperones the goods to their final destination.

The track-on, track-off method is used to deliver equipment under its own power. For example, dump-trucks may he driven to Marseilles, as was the case recently, shipped across

the Mediterranean to Turkey and thereafter delivered to Tehran using Turkish drivers under the Supervision of an EPH technician. Where tracked vehicles are involved they can be discharged from the lowloader onto the ferry and loaded onto "foreign" low-loaders after the ferry journey for the final part of the movement and still by accompanied by an EPH technician. The accompanied throughout policy appears to pay off in respect of goods in transit insurance where, according to Robbi Watson, there have been only two minor claims in three years of operation.
