CAREFUL attention to N.-• functional design is seen in a new ambulance, based on a Commer 25-cwt. forward-control chassis, operated by the Birmingham Hospitals Contributory Association, which has already 13 Commers in service.

The vehicle makes a complete break-away from the conventional style and construction of ambulances, and embodies many features of interest.

Modification has been made to the chassis by Rootes, Ltd., Birmingham, to permit the incorporation of specially designed springing. Other non-standard additions are double-acting shock absorbers and low-pressure tyres, to allow the maximum degree of comfort and smooth riding in operation, and large

capacity dynamo and accumulators, The bodywork, which is constructed throughout in aluminium alloy, was made by the Benson Motor Body Co., Ltd., West Bromwich.

Responsible for the design is Major S. E. J. Hart, transport superintendent of the Birmingham Hospitals Contri butory Association. Notable features include two single rear doors, each hinged in three places to a wide centre pillar and incorporating fasteners of a rattle-proof type.

There is an additional near-side door, for the use of the personnel in attendance. Perspex fixed lights and halfdrop windows are fitted.

Emphasis is placed on ease of cleaning and fumigation of the interior. The floor, which is covered with rubber matting, can easily be cleaned by virtue of the fact that all interior fittings are movable and there are no unnecessary cupboards or mouldings to harbour dust, dirt, or grease.

The ambulance is one of seven being built to the order of the operator. The outward appearance is as striking and practical as the inside, the lines being flowing and the coachwork well proportioned.
