tiA N extensive report of the work of

the British Road Federation during the year 1940-41 has been sent to us by the, honorary secretary, Mr. F. G. Bristow, C.B.E.

The period has proved one during which road transport has more than justified its claims to be recognized as an essential part of the Nation's facilities. These have been voiced, it" and out of season, by the Federation, ever since its inception in 1932, 'and they have, at last, become generally accepted.

Referring to the Ministry of War Transport's road-haulage scheme, it pates that there are indications of proIress being made. The concern of the haulage industry is that the scheme shall be planned to constitute the minimum of interference with the normal working of the industry, and particularly that it shall not adversely affect the post-war position of operators.

Many representations have been made to the M. of .W.T. urging. the need for the necessary Organization and equipment to deal promptly with snow and

#16 with ice formations on road surfaces. Some official action has been taken in this matter.

Pressure has also , been applied to obtain adequate ..maintenance of the highway system, not only in the interests of the future, but as a 'war necessity. The Federation is also seeking means for securing the preparation of post-war highway-development plans ready for immediate implementation.

Representations have been made to the Ministries of Food, Labour and War Transport ies connection with refreshments for drivers.

Dilution of labour by the introduction of women as drivers and in other capacities has been discussed with other bodies concerned.

Other matters dealt with have been the maintenance of commercial vehicles, problems connected with public-service vehicles, the Construction and Use Regulations, whilst special campaigns have been undertaken calling attention to. pot congestion, road maintenance and the proems of driving in the black-out.
