One of Scotland's biggest hauliers has seen a massive annual turnover translated into a considerable loss. David Harris reports.
SCOTTISH-BASED Currie European Transport saw a £.44,600 pre-tax profit in 2003 turn into a £321,000 loss last year, according to its latest accounts.
Currie, which operates 300 tractor units and 600 trailers across Europe, recorded the loss on a turnover of £35.5m in the year to 31 December 2004.
In its directors' report the company says it is "continuing to reposition itself in new markets following the decline of the UK volume export market". Currie had previously been involved in Scotland's high-tech manufacturing sector, which has gone through a severe downturn.
As a result of the loss during 2004 the amount of money declared on the accounts as retained profit (the profit from previous years) fell from a total ol £6.9m to E6.6m.
Currie 's parent company,Currie European Transport Holdings, also owns subsidiary transport companies in France and the Netherlands. Both these firms recorded a loss in 2004.
Currie declines to comment.
