The Rover car company launched its Land Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show Designed as a short-term project to keep the firm busy until the depressed post-war car market picked up it was priced at £450. By 1958, production had reached 200,000 units,

Post war successes and hardships

CM reported that at a London dinner Henry Ford said that America was singularly fortunate in its ability to shift its production machinery from war to peace". Employment in the US passed the 60 million mark in June and American consumers' disposable income was picking up nicely. Ford worried that Britain would struggle to successfully switch back to civilian manufacturing. Britain did adapt to post-war production, but had lost its enviable status as the 'workshop of the world'.

Limited sports activities

Despite the aftermath of the Blitz, London staged the Olympic Games. The Germans and Japanese weren't invited; the Russians were, but chose not to attend.A total of 4,000 competitors took part from 59 countries. Fanny Blankers-Koen. from Holland, was the star of the show, winning four gold medals.

During the scandal, the president's public approval rating soared to 76%.

A bridge too far?

The 3,911m Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge opened in Japan. Its central 1,991m stretch was the longest suspended bridge section in the world. It took 10 years to build and was designed to withstand 178mph winds and 8.5 Richter scale earthquakes. Ironically, high tolls deterred motorists from using the bridge. Many chose to cross the water via ferry the very form of transport the bridge was meant to replace.

Queen's uninvited guest

CM reported that a 33-year-old truck driver from West Bromwich drove his Leyland Daf into the security gates at Buckingham Palace. An unusual tale, but made all the odder by the fact that the driver screamed:"I have seen the light!' Good job his vehicle got no further than the perimeter. 'If he had got any further he would have been shot," said Buckingham Palace security.

Testers' choice

The Leyland Daf 95XF 480 came top in our Testers' Choice High-Powered Tractors category. "We were unanimous in choosing the Daf FT 95XF as our pick of the pride, enthused CM. -this ultra-quiet Space Cabbed 480hp machine with Daf Jake brake and traditional driveline really is the bee's knees." Not a bad truck, then.
