• Maintenance problems have led to the licence held by IVI&K Boyle of Stanley, County Durham being renewed for one year only by North Eastern Deputy LA John Hampton. The firm was seeking renewal of its national licence for 10 trucks and four trailers.

Vehicle examiner John Hughes told the DLA he carried out a maintenance investigation in June following seven immediate and four delayed prohibitions over the past five years.

Four of the vehicles issued with prohibitions were found to have further faults when they were being inspected for clearance. The maintenance facilities were unsatisfactory: there was no provision for brake and headlamp beam tests; the workshop was only partially roofed and promises to install an inspection pit had not been fulfilled, There was no effective system of daily inspections by drivers. Hughes felt the lack of facilities was affecting mainte• nance quality.
